Tom Simone, TrydaNi’s Chief Community Officer, takes part in EV Rally Cymru 2025

We had a great time teaming up with TfW to take part in this year's EV Rally Cymru, a two-day 'race' across Wales to see who can drive the most efficiently.

The event, which took place from October 21-23rd, showcased the capability of electric vehicles and the capacity of Wales' EV infrastructure.

Event organisers GreenFleet put on the event to highlight the remarkable progress Wales has made in clean transport, sustainable energy, and decarbonisation.

Naturally, we were keen to get involved and show our support!

TrydaNi supplied two of our Renault Zoes - the smallest vehicles to take part! - and shared the driving with TfW.

From TrydaNi, the drivers were me,  Sarah and Barbara  (two of our Car Club Coordinators), and we were joined by Tracy, Tony, and Louis from TfW.

Completing the TfW/TrydaNi team was Kevin Booker, a 6-time Guiness World Record holder for driving efficiently —  so we fancied our chances!

Kevin drew my attention to the miles per kWh reading on the dashboard, and directed me to drive as smoothly as possible to squeeze the most mileage I could out of our little car.

On a single charge, we zig-zagged over much of North Wales, from Wrexham, to Llyn Brenig, Colwyn Bay, M-Sparc Science Park, and down to Aberystwyth.

My miles per kwHour was 4.7, which is apparently very good, although I did seem to be driving down hill quite a bit!

Barbara and Sarah took the wheel on day two and continued southwards to Trecwn, the Museum of Land Speed, and Cross Hands. The TfW crew completed the final leg to  Castell Craig-y-Nos, and Newport International Sports Village.

The checkpoints gave us an opportunity to talk to the other teams, who represented businesses and organisations from across the EV landscape.

Against  stiff competition, we were very pleased to come third overall for efficient driving, once the final scores were tallied up. (Costelloes’ team came first in their Ioniq 5, and UK Renewables were second in  a Renault Master E-Tech van).

It was also great to get messages of support  from TrydaNi car club members, and meet the various checkpoint partners en route.

The whole experience gave the feeling of being part of something bigger — that TrydaNi car clubs, and all the members who support this initiative by sharing our cars, are part of a wider EV movement.

TrydaNi is funded by Welsh Government and advised by TfW,  so a big thanks to them and to everyone else involved who helped make the EV Rally  such a great event.
