Our committment to Cymraeg

By Tom Simone, Chief Community Officer, TrydaNi
At TrydaNi, we’re building a service that strengthens communities by providing access to sustainable transport
Our mission is to deliver zero-emission car-sharing that is affordable, convenient, and rooted in the places where people live and work. As a Community Benefit Society, the Welsh language is an integral part of our mission. Welsh isn’t just about translation – it’s part of the identity, culture and everyday life of many of the communities we serve.
That’s why we are committed to ensuring that Welsh speakers can engage with TrydaNi in their language, whether they’re reading our website, receiving communications from us, or booking a vehicle.
Building a genuinely bilingual service
TrydaNi has a team of eight staff spread across Wales, and we’re proud to be a mix of Welsh speakers and Welsh learners.
Our support line is answered by various staff members, some of whom are bilingual.
All our online help content, digital output, and print materials are bilingual.
These are our aims:
Providing key information on our website in both Welsh and English
Offering bilingual communications to members
Making sure important documents and policies are available bilingually
Designing our systems so that bilingual content can be delivered consistently
As TrydaNi grows and new car clubs are launched across Wales, ensuring that our service works seamlessly in both languages will remain a core priority. Find out more detail about our Welsh Offer here.
Working with the Welsh Language Commissioner
To make sure we are doing this properly, we are currently working with the office of the Welsh Language Commissioner to develop a Welsh language development plan for TrydaNi.
This work will help us embed best practice throughout the organisation — from communications and customer experience to internal processes and staff development.
By working closely with the Commissioner’s office, we want to make sure that our approach to the Welsh language is thoughtful, practical, and built for the long term as the organisation grows.
Learning Welsh within the TrydaNi team
Our commitment to the Welsh language starts inside the organisation.
Some members of the TrydaNi team are Welsh speakers, while others are learning the language as part of their personal and professional development. Building Welsh language skills within the team helps us better understand the communities we work with and strengthens our ability to deliver a truly bilingual service.
Tess Cartwright, TrydaNi’s Product and member strategist has been learning Welsh alongside her work developing the digital systems behind the car clubs.
She said: “Living in a Welsh village, learning the language has helped me to connect with my neighbours in their mother tongue. I can see the appreciation for my willingness to try.
“The Welsh language has a really interesting structure and style that gives me a closer insight into the land and people. I am getting better and better each week and my goal is to be fluent one day.
“Growing up in French Canada I understand the importance of not just defaulting to English. There is a colonial history of making English the dominant language and in trying to learn Welsh I feel it is a form of solidarity and activism in the modern world.”
Andrew Capel, TrydaNi’s Operations Manager, has already learned Welsh and uses it regularly in his work.
He said: “Being able to speak and write in Welsh at work is important to me because it makes it a living language and not something I have learnt on-line or in a classroom. It also demonstrates to members that we respect and value their language and culture..”
